SEXUAL DIVERSITY AND GENDER PLURALITY

This timeline examines the positions of the Fédération des Femmes du Québec (FFQ) on sexual diversity and gender plurality. It emphasizes struggles for the rights and recognition of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, as well as efforts to combat lesbophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, and cissexism.

2016

THAT orientations 13 A to G guide work on the field of action Feminism, image, body, sexuality, gender, and violence:

  • Combat all forms of violence against women and girls.
  • Denounce businesses, institutions, and other actors contributing to the oppression of women and girls.
  • Promote diversity in images and social representations of women and girls.
  • Reinforce conditions favoring the ability of women, girls, and intersex and/or trans individuals to live freely and without violence, to self-determine, thrive, and create.
  • Emphasize the pivotal role of education in promoting egalitarian social relationships.
  • Counter heteronormativity.
  • Develop reflections and positions on gender and sex binary while denouncing resulting violence, without compromising the principle of self-determination, and recognizing the leadership and analyses of those most affected.
  • Support struggles against the appropriation and commodification of the bodies of women and girls.

2015

THAT FFQ expand its understanding of the realities experienced by trans and intersex individuals, and the impacts of cissexism.

2010

THAT the following proposal be referred to the board of directors:

“THAT FFQ organize a meeting for lesbians, before the General Assembly, aiming to discuss queer theory and its impact on feminist analysis.”

2007

THAT the Comité pour la reconnaissance des lesbiennes organize events focusing on various lesbian realities, especially those experienced by lesbians from cultural communities. Some of these events may be organized jointly with the Comité des femmes des communautés culturelles.

2006

THAT FFQ continue to reflect on the specific discriminations experienced by lesbians from cultural communities and initiates the development of intervention strategies with women’s groups from cultural communities on this issue.

2005

THAT FFQ initiate a reflection with lesbian women from cultural communities on the discrimination they experience.

2004

THAT FFQ work to better understand lesbophobia, make it visible in public discourse, and identify means to eliminate these prejudices and discrimination.

THAT FFQ work nationally and internationally to reduce the invisibility of lesbians.

THAT FFQ maintain its participation in the Coalition québécoise pour le mariage civil des conjointes et conjoints and supports actions initiated therein.

These positions were taken when the Canadian government asked the Supreme Court to rule on same-sex marriage. It was deemed that this judgment would be an important legal step in achieving equality for lesbians.

1997

THAT FFQ intensify its efforts to legitimize the visibility of lesbians within the Federation and continues to develop solidarity ties with lesbian women by supporting their actions to counter discrimination and violence against them.
