ECOLOGISM AND LIVING WELL

The Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ) has long recognized the importance of ecologism and the need to incorporate climate issues into its activities and advocacy. We are actively involved in concrete environmental actions, such as the climate strike and Earth Day. In 2000, we established the World March of Women, an international event that highlights the significance of climate-related demands with each edition.

Critique of Extractivism and Proposal of Alternatives

From 2016 to 2018, the FFQ engaged in the Des-terres-minées project, criticizing extractive practices through the lenses of feminism and anti-colonialism. We advocate for the development of alternatives to extractive industries to minimize their negative impacts on populations.

Promotion of Equitable and Sustainable Economic Practices

Our orientations aim to eliminate gender and racial divisions in labor, promote economic practices focused on well-being and justice, and articulate a feminist, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial vision of the relationship between humans and the Earth. Over the years, we have worked to develop a position that highlights Earth’s depletion caused by the pursuit of continuous growth.

Prioritization of Ecofeminism and Climate Justice

More recently, in 2023, we integrated ecofeminism and climate justice into our annual priorities. We aim to implement concrete actions in this regard.

2019

THAT FFQ, in collaboration with allied organizations that participated in the international meeting Women Resisting Extractivism in April 2018, develop a position on extractivism and submit it to its members.

THAT FFQ produce, to the extent possible, an accessible tool on ecofeminism to facilitate its adoption by its members, highlighting Earth’s depletion caused, among other factors, by the paradigm of growth rather than well-being.

THAT the production of this tool be an opportunity, to the extent possible, for political reflection with FFQ members on the gender division of tasks, regarding eco-responsible citizen actions performed in the domestic sphere, and the remaining gender inequalities;

THAT FFQ participate in actions around the climate strike day of September 27, 2019, Earth Day in April 2020, and joins in preparing for the World March of Women 2020.

2017

THAT FFQ resume its involvement in the Des-terres-minées/Women Resisting Extractivism project, aimed at developing a critique of territorial exploitation practices with feminist anti-colonial analyses;

THAT FFQ, along with women’s groups in affected regions, participate in developing alternatives to extraction industries, so that populations do not bear the cost of transitioning to more ecological economic activity.

THAT FFQ use dishes and glasses made of recyclable materials at all its gatherings.

THAT FFQ form an alliance with environmental groups to ensure that our governments enforce the Kyoto Protocol.
