DISABILITY AND CAPACITISM

This timeline explores the positions of the Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ) on disability and ableism. It highlights struggles against discrimination based on ability, and explores how to make FFQ bodies more accessible.

2024

THAT FFQ consider the intersection of gender and disability, visible and invisible, in the same way as other forms of discrimination when developing its various campaigns;

THAT FFQ implement initiatives with and for people at the intersection of gender and disability;

THAT FFQ continuously develop its accessibility practices, in particular by drawing inspiration from universal design.

2009

THAT the following proposal be referred to the board of directors:

“THAT FFQ explicitly identify ableism or capacitism as systems of oppression and exclusion of women, particularly in the World March of Women, texts on violence experienced by disabled women, etc.

THAT FFQ also advocate for the demands of disabled women, such as universal accessibility that enables the civic participation of disabled women (buildings, services and programs, attitudes, and communications).

THAT FFQ ensure its website is universally accessible (W3C).”

2009

THAT FFQ work with other women’s groups to ensure that the rights of women with disabilities are recognized beyond the borders of Quebec and Canada.
