12 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence

Since 2008, the Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ) has spearheaded the “12 Days Committee” – a dynamic coalition of organizations representing marginalized women who grapple with systemic discrimination. Each of these organizations is on the front lines, possessing specialized knowledge in both intervention and the fight against violence. United, every year from November 25 to December 6, we launch a concerted campaign targeting the eradication of gender-based violence.

The “12 Days of Action” is not just a campaign; it’s a period of collective introspection on the pervasive issue of violence and a platform to advocate for actionable solutions. During these days, women’s groups across Quebec mobilize, holding events to enlighten the public. Furthermore, it serves as a clarion call, urging provincial and federal governments to take decisive action against the ingrained violence that shadows both Quebec and Canada.

2023 Campaign: Gendered precariousness, ignored violence

Precariousness and poverty are forms of extreme violence that are too rarely recognized and denounced. In 2023, as the cost of living soars and wages struggle to keep pace with inflation, it’s high time to question what we accept as a society. It’s imperative to recognize and challenge the unacceptable standards we’ve tolerated for far too long.

It’s time to face reality: precariousness is never an individual choice. Collectively, we accept all this violence. Collectively, we accept that precariousness oppresses, violates and weakens people at the crossroads of oppression, making them even more vulnerable to all other types of violence.

This systemic violence persists all the more insidiously because it develops and feeds on silence. It is essential that society becomes aware of these problems, commits itself to concrete action to combat poverty and inequality, and works towards a more just and equitable society where economic violence and precariousness are no longer accepted.
